Welcome to the City of Peace Ottawa website!

Visible in the picture above are the Parliament Buildings and the Supreme Court of Canada - institutions intended to be seats of democracy and justice .... yet only in a permanent state of peace can we truly find the realization of these two concepts.

With an amazingly diverse mix of cultures and ethnic backgrounds, Ottawa is a microcosm of the World.  If we can succeed in making Ottawa a model city of peace - if everyone can come together with all their differences and walk together as one - then why can't we live in peace everywhere on Earth?  We can. And we will.

Please join us on the inevitable journey toward peace ...

     2011 PATH-OF-PEACE WALK - SATURDAY OCTOBER 1st

City of Peace Ottawa again held the national capital's annual peace walk on Saturday, October 1st.

We started from Minto Park on Gilmour Street at Elgin, the site of the Women's Monument, dedicated to women who have lost their lives to violence and abuse. From the park, we walked north along Elgin Street, and headed to Ottawa's City Hall to join the annual Friends for Peace event taking place there.

Jean Béliveau - Peace Walker Extraordinaire!

After walking around the Earth for 11 years to promote peace for the sake of children, Jean was in Ottawa on October 1st to walk with us on the Path of Peace! You can check out Jean's amazing journey
here. After leaving Ottawa the following week, Jean finished his historic around-the-world walk on October 16th in Montreal - which he left in August, 2000!  Mr. Béliveau, along with three other nominees, received the Friends for Peace Award from Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson at City Hall on October 1st.

Max Keeping - 2011 Path-of-Peace Parade Marshall!

Who better to have lead this year's Path of Peace event - with it's emphasis on peace for children - than CTV Ottawa's Community Ambassador and well-loved local celebrity? Through the
Max Keeping Foundation, Max has helped hundreds of kids in Ontario and Western Quebec access enriching experiences they would not have been able to afford otherwise, but which every child deserves.

When the World unites ...

A recurring theme of our Ottawa Path of Peace event each year is the coming together of representatives of nations from around the World. Our event is unique to the city of Ottawa, and this part of it symbolizes a “circle of all nations”, (www.circleofallnations.ca) the longstanding vision of Elder Grandfather William Commanda, hereditary chief of the Algonquin people and a true Canadian icon and hero. Sadly, Grandfather passed away on August 3, 2011 at 97 years of age. Therefore, it is all the more important that we all carry on his legacy. The "circle of all nations" aspect fits naturally with our nation's capital since our city is also the home of diplomatic missions from over 100 countries, not to mention the home of hundreds of thousands of Canadians that came from those countries to Canada!

We are all united here. Let's show the World that peace is possible everywhere - and join us on the Path of Peace!
